Shiplap! Should you?

Updated: Nov 19, 2020

I love the look of shiplap however I really feel that it is going to be one of those faddish decorating items. It can be expensive depending on the size of the area and it is a commitment.

So when I wanted to add the look to the area around my fireplace I was having a bit of a commitment issue. I didn’t want to be pigeonholed or tell my husband in two years I wanted a new look.

I went on a creative journey to figure out a way to get the look without the commitment. I think I found it! It looks amazing and I can easily change it when I'm ready for a new look.

Faux Shiplap

1. Paint the wall the desired color of your shiplap. I used White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

Don’t worry about a nice even coat. It kind of adds to the wood feel of shiplap.

2. Make hash marks down your wall every 6 inches.

3. Using a level, make your slat lines by drawing horizontal lines.

The Trick! A portrait stick!

The stick goes on in an uneven fade there by giving you the uneven line between the shiplap. (The portrait stick can be purchased at an art supply store such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels)
